Okay a bit Late but here is the work
Aug. 26th, 2008 08:50 pmFirst and Second days of work for the school year.
Yesterday: Mad House
20 Kinders, and pretty much no one to go by and see how their personalities were. To make things worse snack was disorganised because the people incharge didn't give up their code stamps a log sheets. Not really my bosses fault. We also didn't have attenance sheets, and the logs we were given there were typos.
But we had a few scared kids with tears. They had gone through the whole day and just wanted to see their moms and dads. We wanted to be firm but not lay down the hammer of authority on the kids. So work was a balance of keeping control and but being in control. Absoulte hell on the nerves. Oi. But first we had to do potty breaks, and that was hard because the kids don't have the firm rules like no talking in the halls. And both me and my partner (thank god I'm a girl and he's a guy) both had to go into the bathrooms to catch the kids before they wen't out of hand as they went in groups of 4 at a time. Already I spotted potential trouble makers, not the hardcore ones, but eh. One boy was constantly asking what are we doing and usually said he wanted to do something different. Like at snack he wanted cereal instead of yogurt.
Then we went to the gym, introduced ourselves and the had the kids to each other, that turned into a screaming match. Then I had a game we used the circle in the middle of the gym where one person said I like ___, everyone who likes ___, MOVE! And it was a scramble to get to the otherside, last one left takes place in the center. The kids soon didn't care what blank was, like a girl shouted princess, and ALL the boys ran across to find a spot.
After that we played Man On Mars. Class is split up to two groups, one on each side. The man on mars calls out a color, the objective is to make it accross to the other side and not get taged. Once tagged you become a man on mars and help the color caller catch more people. Last person left becomes the new man on mars. I started as man on mars. They got the whole if you got this color on, but didn't get that you stayed in the lines, nor that if you're tagged you go to the middle with the man on mars, nor did they get you only go across once until another color you're wearing is called.
After two games (would have been more, but like I said, trying to FIND a winner was not easy) then left the gym to go inside the kinder building. They cooled off a few minutes then we allowed them to go into the kinder playground joined to the kinder building. At this point a lot of parents suddently started showing up way too early. I took them to see my boss who handed me a huge stack of folders. There wasn't a signout check out sheet to see who was authorized to pick up the kids done yet, so we would have to go by case folder by case folder. Since I was there I was given the task to give out kinder, 1st, 2nd, and 4th who were all in the kinder building. Joy.
After another 15 minutes we brought them in and I played a game, guess what I am where I discribe what animal I was but they had to figure it out. My co-worker didn't think they wouldn't no that many. I proved wrong, thank you animal planet. The only two animals they didn't get were Alligator, they kept calling out crocodiles when I said it was related to it, and Tasmania devil. I guessed cow, giraff, panda, anaconda (one kid), rattle snake, killer whale, and squid (actually only one got this one) by the time we had to pack up.
It was an absolute mess. Parents didn't care for our regulations, which were for the childs safety. (I found out today someone showed up at the school yestrday during school hours trying to pick up a girl claiming he was her father and wasn't, scary no?) What usually takes 15 to 30 minutes took over an 45, and that was parents grabbing their kids and leaving.
Today: Contained Chaos
Today was much the same thing with snack, minus the tears, then we had potty break. After that we took them directly to the playground. They weren't use to the heat and we had to bring them in after twenty minutes. We had three coloring sheets. Most were messy but a few did try to color nicely. Today we were a lot stricker than the day before. Putting two kids in time out, one twice. She didn't like that at all, but she would talk talk talk and not listen. Something of a story teller, look at me, look at me. They got done a lot quicker than we thought they would, usually they socialize quietly and color slowly (at least last year did). So we borrowed two of the teachers books and read to the class. Normally were not suppose to, but its the same teacher we worked with last year and she's cool.
Pick up was a little better, but only because we put the kids in the back of the cafiteria, locked all but two doors, each on different sides, and laid down the law with the kids. You get up before you are told to by your teachers you loose recess tomorrow. The entire 1st grade lost recess simply for being the worst and not listening over all. Two more kids I should have taken recess from kinder by they were among the last of left. But again, it took way longer than normal, but not as bad as the day before. Tomorrow we'll be even stricker with time outs.
I'll clean this up later, I need to crash, bad.

The games sound fun...
