The Texas Valero Open!
May. 16th, 2009 11:44 pmWell, let me start from the beginning. So I'm waiting for the bus and there is no one at the bus stop. I worry I was given the wrong instructions or if there was a mis-cominication somewhere. But eventually the bus arrives and I get on it. There are two other Learning Tree staff and four kids already on board. Did I mention this is a large bus? So we stop at one more school and pick up just one more kid. That' it, before heading to the Boy's and Girl's Club center on the west side. Shortly after we arrive regular boys and girls club kids and other Learning Tree staff arrive.
I really, really felt out of place. Most of the staff weren't really around the kids much and a few were doing some no nos, allowing the kids to mess with their phones. I am not really sure what to do about this. I know a lot of staff, myself included, would like to take pictures of the kids but we can't. Much less let them use your phone for anything...
Anyways, we're there for about an hour before we load up onto a different bus and head out. It takes a good half hour to get there. I'll save the details, it was rather boring in general. The kids got a goodie bag, the Spurs Silver Dancers did a performance and the Silver Stars fox was there. The Spurs Coyote was a no show. Then the horns when off. Rain coming and we were ushered into trailers on the side of the grouds, which have no bathrooms by the way.
Ten minues go by, then twenty. They start to bring food in for the kids and other guest when the raid starts to fall. Its simply a single torilla and a sagauge with some chips. Some kids got cookies and I learned others in aother trailer got ice cream. The rain really started to fall after that and an hour in knocked the power out. Another hour goes by and we're just trying to contain the kids who are starting to go stir crazy. And what's worst, they need to go to the bathroom.
And this is how I get drenched. I escorted two seperate groups of girls in the rain to some fancy porta potties. And I stayed wet for over two hours before I got home. My joints still ache from being inside the Boy's and Girl's building, the AC worked really well and I stayed cold even after we left.
It wasn't really a bad day, it went by pretty fast all things considered. I just ache and not too pleased about that. But I get two days worth of pay, so it makes up for the pain. Plus, most of the kids were behaved, just stir crazy.
I still say golf is a boring game.
