Just in case it's helpful, years ago I had an all-wheel drive car. As I recall it had the same problem yours does, it was going to cost mucho to fix, more than I could afford, so my mechanic said he could just disable the rear wheel drive altogether. So if you can't get it covered under a recall maybe that'll be an option for you.
